‘Grandad’s Island Sound Symphony’ was created by year two pupils at Willow Brook Primary School, Leyton with Artist in Residence Helen Maurer, inspired by the picture book ‘Grandad’s Island’ by Benji Davies.
All the sounds were made either with our voices or by using everyday objects to create sound effects in workshop sessions led by Helen, together with collaborators Dominique Golden – the sound
of drawing, and Ted Barnes – creating strange underwater sounds, monkey interviews and banjo.
Composed by Helen Maurer and Ted Barnes.
The piece was commissioned by Artillery as part of ‘Grandad’s Island: from Page to Pavement’ project for Waltham Forest, London Borough of Culture, 2019.
