Britten Sinfonia Academy
Britten Sinfonia – one of the UK’s most pioneering classical music groups – and their Academy perform music from two of the most popular composers working today: Philip Glass and Steve Reich.
Having worked with the likes of Paul Simon, Ravi Shankar, David Byrne and Aphex Twin, and made countless film soundtracks, Philip Glass has crossed over from just being a ‘classical’ musician. His Music in Similar Motion – written in 1969 just after meeting Shankar in India and performed this lunchtime – employs minimalist styles of repetition and gradual change similar to that of Indian folk music to create energising music for sore heads. And the Academy will also be performing Steve Reich’s iconic minimalist piece for two people (and four hands), Clapping Music.
