This year, the Barbican is excited to be back working alongside the communities of Waltham Forest in the lead up to the Walthamstow Garden Party. We have been busy this year working with our local partners to organise arts activities in the local area like the Community Masterclasses and the Ideas Kitchen. The Barbican’s Community Ambassadors have been busy spreading the word about these opportunities and others in the borough. Have a look below for more information on ways to get involved in your local arts community in the lead up to the festival, during Walthamstow Garden Party and throughout the year.
The Ideas Kitchen
The Ideas Kitchen is a micro-granting dinner, celebrating and supporting projects in the borough of Waltham Forest. Whether you have an idea or just want to support local projects - the Ideas Kitchen is a great way to support creativity in your local area and get to know your neighbours.

Community Masterclasses: March - June
Following the success of the marketing and fundraising masterclasses last year, the Barbican has partnered with Waltham Forest Council again to offer four more sessions exploring enterprise and running a business. These free two hour evening sessions will be held from 7pm-9pm in and around Waltham Forest for anyone that lives, works or studies in the borough. You can read about the individual sessions in the enterprise season here.
Walthamstow Garden Party 2017
The strength of Walthamstow Garden Party lies in its community. Last year 56 local partners were involved in delivering or producing content, with a further 54 local artists & designers presenting work during the event. In addition, more than 100 local organisations participated in the Community Marquee and local food & drink producers were featured within the Fellowship Island programme and beyond.
There are lots of different ways to participate in this year’s event. So, have a look at some of the links below and get involved.
We are currently recruiting again to build our team of Community Ambassadors that help spread the word about the Walthamstow Garden Party and other events and projects leading up to it.
The Ambassadors are the glue of the Barbican’s work in the community they work on the ground, visiting community centres, flyering on high streets, meeting groups and travelling with them to Barbican events, to make sure that everyone gets the opportunity to access great art and culture.
It is a paid role and you can apply here.
